Controlled Burn of Burgess Farm
When the poultry farmer George Burgess retired in 1965, he sold his home, business, and land on Tuttle Road to the school district to build what is now the Mabel I. Wilson School.
To clear the site for construction of the new school, the fire department demolished the buildings with a controlled burn and used the experience as a thorough training program for its firefighters.
Today, the Cumberland Fire Department is part of the Coastal Mutual Aid Association, and is prepared to provide aid for a number of neighboring towns in the event of a major emergency event.
