Adams Blacksmith Shop, Main Street, Cumberland, Maine

Around 1828, Capt. Edward Wilson moved his business from Tuttle Road to a new location just south of the Congregational Church. Rooms over the store allowed his family to live conveniently.

Around 1832, Wilson sold to Isaac Merrill, who ran the store for 20 years. Nathaniel Humphrey bought the store around 1857 and sold it to Frank Hall at the beginning of his medical career. Tragically, he died only five years later, and his brother, Dr. Milton Hall, took over the practice.

Later, Oren Thomes bought the place and, eventually, Fred Adams, who built his blacksmith shop beside it. The blacksmith shop, located conveniently near the church, was where the majority of the town had their horses shod. Since shoeing horses took time, chairs were provided for customers to sit and converse.
