Residents of the northwestern portion of North Yarmouth petitioned the Massachusetts Legislature to establish a new church in 1793, leading to the establishment of the Second Church in North Yarmouth.

In 1794, a small square structure was built at the corner of Blanchard Road and Main Street. After Cumberland became independent from North Yarmouth in 1821, the church changed its name to the Congregational Church in Cumberland, by which it is still known. The original building was constructed too close to the road and was demolished, and a new sanctuary was constructed in 1831 adjacent to the original site.
