John Handcock
After returning from service in World War II, John Handcock of Cumberland Center attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Following graduation, he became involved in the field of advertising, where he worked on newspaper and magazine ads, television storyboards, and annual reports for banks.
Handcock eventually retired from the advertising industry and spent four years as a freelancer, after which he went into teaching. He taught art at the junior and senior high schools in Yarmouth for six years, and then returned to working as a freelancer for six more years.
Following his retirement from the business world, Handcock has enjoyed participating in many art shows. He has displayed hundreds of pieces at South Portland's Art in the Park show since the event was first staged in 1979.
