Lizzie Copp's Class, District #4 School, Cumberland, Maine

Throughout the 1800s, the District Four Shawtown School was often credited with having some of the brightest students in Cumberland, and enjoyed a relatively high attendance rate.

For a time, the school received students from District Twelve on Blackstrap Road, before they were sent to Falmouth schools. After Cumberland’s one-room schools were closed in 1950, the Shawtown school was converted into the current J. Brothers Variety store on Route 100.
