E.K. Sweetser School, Cumberland, Maine

Although he only taught for three years at the District Three school before returning in 1891, Ezra K. Sweetser’s commitment to education left an impression on the Cumberland community.

The school district agent who observed his class in 1881 reported that, under his management, the Tuttle Road School “was one of the best in town” and that Sweetser was “just the teacher needed” for the class. Sweetser provided land for a new public grammar school, which was named E. K. Sweetser School and opened in 1914. The school served grades seven and eight until 1954.

Today, the building houses the administrative offices for MSAD 51.
