District #2 School, Tuttle Road, Cumberland, Maine

The Tuttle Road school was a typical one-room schoolhouse with separate entries for boys and girls. Originally located on Harris Road, the building was moved by oxen in 1854 to its current location, diagonally across from the Tuttle Road Methodist Church.

In a 1986 interview, Robert Cram recalled,

“It was one room, nine grades, one teacher, two stoves, on each end of the building, wood stoves, and we went across the street to get a pail of water and that was about the luxury we had.”

According to school reports from 1865 through 1906, the schoolhouse on Tuttle Road was often plagued with issues that hindered academic progress. Observers often noted that the teachers for the term would likely excel at any other school, and that District Two required a very specific type of teacher.
