The 1901 report suggests that the academic and disciplinary problems stemmed from home, saying,

“Home influence affects schools the most of any known thing. It is too much to expect of a teacher that she shall smooth away family feuds of years standing. The next teacher in No. 2 should be a disciplinarian of tried experience and, if necessary, she should be aided in her efforts to secure order. An unfortunate condition of affairs holds here.”

Observers also noted that the Tuttle Road pupils’ knowledge of subjects like mental arithmetic, geography, and history were next to none. Despite these challenges, however, the Tuttle Road school was, under the right supervision, sometimes considered one of the best in town. After it was closed in 1950, it became a private dwelling.
