Gyger Gymnasium, Greely Institute, Cumberland, Maine

The new school gymnasium, built under the auspices of the federal Public Works Administration, was named in honor of John T. Gyger, superintendent between 1928 and 1939, who died one week before the building’s dedication on June 9, 1939.

The basement housed agriculture and shop classes, as well as modern toilets, locker rooms, and showers for athletic activities. Beginning in 1947, the gymnasium hosted the annual town meeting.
