James L. Dunn Store, Cumberland, Maine

The J. L. Dunn store was built on the site of the
former Blanchard Brothers store.
In January 1878, The Cumberland Globe ran a notice that read,

“The brothers F. S. and E. L. Blanchard have bought the store of York & Doughty, and will run a general store under the firm name Blanchard Bros. With commendable spirit, they propose to ship their own corn direct from the West, and supply farmers at cheaper rates than heretofore. Will grind their own corn as soon as they make arrangements for steam power.”

The Blanchard Brothers building burned around 1888, and the J. L. Dunn General Store operated from 1890 until 1923. The store was later managed by other merchants, including T. R. Jordan, Paul Merrill, and Howard Call. The building had apartments on the second floor. By 1960, the store had closed, and was converted to all apartments.
