Nicholas L. Humphrey House, Main Street, c.1870

The Capt. Nicholas L. Humphrey house on Main Street in Cumberland. To the left of the house, not pictured, was the home of Jennie Soule Dunn, built sometime in the 1870s. To the right of the house is the former N.L. Humphrey store, which was later sold to Fred Adams, a blacksmith.

The blacksmith shop, conveniently near the church, was where the majority of the town had their horses shod. Since shoeing horses took time, chairs were provided for customers to sit and converse. The Humphrey house later served as the parsonage for the Congregational Church, and was moved to Blanchard Road when the new parish hall was built.
