Dam and Mill, Skillins Road, West Cumberland, Maine

Many streams and rivers in Maine provided ripe power sources for water-powered mills.

The need for building materials increased rapidly with New England’s population, and eventually there were mills on most rivers and streams. Most sawmills were small scale, with a single saw, and integral to the local economy. Cumberland was no exception.

This mill on Skillins Road later became a private residence.
